Mark Bell opened the scoring at 5:56 of the first period when he screened Monsters goalie Trevor Cann and tipped the puck through the legs of the Lake Erie goalie for the eventual game-winner. J.F. Jacques added another goal for Syracuse just over three minutes later when he corralled a loose puck in front of Cann and flipped a backhander over the shoulder of the Monsters netminder. The Crunch took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. Syracuse failed to score until the 16:12 mark of the second period, at which point Nick Bonino split the Monsters defense, streaked in on a breakaway, and scored on his own rebound after his initial shot was denied by Cann. With the score 3-0, Rick Schofield scored on another rebound just 90 seconds later to extend the Syracuse lead to 4-0. Dan Sexton snapped a wrist shot from the right circle that beat Cann at 4:29 of the third period to give the Crunch a 5-0 lead; the goal was the second power play tally of the evening for the Crunch. After Bell’s wrist shot from the high-slot beat Cann just over two minutes later, Monsters head coach David Quinn called on rookie James Reid to relieve Cann. Jacques scored again to give Syracuse a 7-0 lead at 12:08 of the third period. Cann falls to 2-6-0 on the season; he stopped 23 of 29 shots in 46:36 of work. James Reid stopped three of four shots in 13:24 of playing time; the appearance was Reid’s second this season, and second of his professional career. Iiro Tarkki stopped all 25 Monsters shots; he is 1-1-1. The Monsters are back in action Friday night at The Q when they host the Toronto Marlies. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. and can be seen on FOX Sports Ohio and heard on AM 1220 WHKW.
