In a game that saw each team take multiple leads, the Lake Erie Monsters were handed a 4-3 shootout loss by the Toronto Marlies Wednesday night at Quicken Loans Arena. Michael Schumacher, Stefan Elliott, and Brett Clark scored for the Monsters, while Colin Smith chipped in a pair of assists. The Monsters are back on the ice to continue their homestand Friday at 7:30 PM against Rochester.

The goal was the sixth of the season for Schumacher, and was assisted by Smith. Toronto had an answer 9:10 later, when Trevor Smith snapped a puck top-shelf from the slot on the power play to tie the game at 1-1 for the Marlies.

At 14:54 of the second period, Josh Leivo scored on a shot through traffic from the right wing to give Toronto a 2-1 lead, but Elliott tied the game at 18:18 of the frame for the Monsters. Smith saw Elliott streaking in from the right point, and slipped a pass from the left boards to Elliott, who snapped the puck past Spark to tie the game 2-2. Elliott’s 11th goal of the season was also assisted by Trevor Cheek.

Brett Clark scored from the center point for the Monsters to give them a 3-2 lead at 4:04 of the third period; Clark’s fifth goal of the season. Mark Olver and J.T. Wyman assisted on Clark’s second goal in as many games, but Toronto’s Korbinian Holzer scored on a point shot with 2:30 left to force the game to overtime, and ultimately to a shootout.
