Aittokallio Stops 25, Monsters Shutout Rochester 5-0Tweet
Troy Bourke notched three points in his professional hockey debut and Sami Aittokallio turned away all 25 shots he faced as the Lake Erie Monsters topped the Rochester Americans 5-0 before a Quicken Loans Arena crowd of 12,685 Friday night. Bourke had a goal and two assists, as did Mark Olver, in the Monsters win. J.T. Wyman scored twice, while Michael Schumacher also scored for the Monsters. The Monsters host Rochester Sunday at 3:00 PM to finish a three-game homestand.
Bourke put the Monsters on the board when he scored a goal while down on the ice. A rebound sat to the right of Rochester goalie Connor Knapp, and Bourke took one last jab at the puck, knocking it over the goal line for the eventual game-winner. Matt Hunwick and Olver assisted on the goal, which was Bourke’s first as a professional.
The Monsters added a pair of insurance goals in the second period, first taking a 2-0 lead when Schumacher batted a puck out of mid-air from in close for his seventh goal of the season. Colin Smith and Olver assisted on the goal, which was scored on the power play. Wyman scored the first of his two goals at 12:11 of the second period, giving the Monsters a 3-0 lead when he centered a puck to the front of the net that deflected off a Rochester defender and into the net. The goal gave Wyman five on the season, and was assisted by Mike Sgarbossa and Bourke.
Wyman gave the Monsters a 4-0 lead when he scored his sixth of the season at 11:57 of the third period, backhanding a rebound top-shelf to beat Knapp. Bourke and Karl Stollery assisted on the goal. Just under five minutes later, at 16:46, Mark Olver banged in a rebound for his 13th goal of the season to give the Monsters a 5-0 lead. Garrett Meurs and Mitchell Heard assisted on the goal.
Aittokallio is 11-11-2 after stopping 25 shots for his third shutout of the season in net for the Monsters. Knapp stopped 34 of 39 shots for Rochester, and is 0-1-0 in the American Hockey League this season.
The Monsters host Rochester again on Sunday at 3:00 PM.
