The city itself is historically significant due to the political, financial and educational roles it has played in American history.

Since, the city has blossomed into one of the nation’s most notable hockey sites.

Two of Cleveland’s favorite Monsters – head coach David Quinn and center Greg Mauldin – both have significant ties to Boston.

Quinn, who recently finished his second season as the Monsters’ bench boss, suited up in 94 games for the Boston University Terriers (1984-87), while earning a degree in Sociology.

Following his collegiate and professional playing days, Quinn returned to BU to serve as the associate head coach of their hockey team. Quinn’s five-year stint behind the Terriers’ bench concluded with a national championship in the spring of 2008.

Mauldin, who was born in Boston on June 10, 1982, played three years at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst (2001-2004) in preparation for his pro career.

In terms of hockey prodigies, Maudlin and Quinn are in good company.

Many of the game’s most storied names – Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Eddie Shore and Ray Bourque – spent considerable portions of their careers playing in Boston. Those predecessors of today’s NHL superstars like Tim Thomas and Nathan Horton built a foundation for today’s Bruins, who are currently battling the Vancouver Canucks in the final round of the Stanly Cup Playoffs.

While the city has welcomed five Stanley Cup Championships since 1924, the proud city looks for a sixth this summer.
