Lerg Named Captain, Alternates Announced

Tuesday was a big day for five particular Lake Erie Monsters players.

After a typical morning skate at the team’s practice facility – Hoover Arena operated by IceLand USA in Strongsville – Monsters head coach Dean Chynoweth announced the captain and alternates for the 2012-13 team.

Left wing Bryan Lerg will wear the “C” this year, while left wing David van der Gulik and right wing Bill Thomas will serve as alternate captains at home.  Defenseman Thomas Pock and center Brad Malone will both wear the “A” for road games.

Lerg is in his first season with the Monsters and his fifth in the AHL.  He spent the past two seasons in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and the two prior to that in Springfield.  Lerg had a successful four-year career at Michigan State University, where he won the National Championship as a junior in 2007.

The 2012-13 season marks the third for van der Gulik with the Monsters.  The past two seasons he split time between Lake Erie and the Colorado Avalanche.  Prior to joining the Avalanche, van der Gulik spent four seasons with the Calgary Flames organization , mainly with their AHL affiliates in Omaha, then Quad city, followed by Abbotsford.  He has appeared in 37 total NHL games.  van der Gulik is a 2006 graduate of Boston University.

Thomas is in his seventh year as a pro and first with Lake Erie.  After two years in the USHL and  two at the University of Omaha, he spent time with Phoenix/San Antonio, Pittsburgh/Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Springfield, Florida/Rochester and most recently, San Antonio again.  Thomas has appeared in 87 NHL games overall.

Pock joins the Monsters this season after playing the last three overseas, in Switzerland for two and last season in Sweden.  Prior to that, Pock spent four seasons going between the New York Rangers and Hartford Wolfpack, before playing a year with the New York Islanders.  He has appeared in 118 total NHL games in his career so far.  Pock played four years at UMass-Amherst.

After four successful years at the University of North Dakota, Malone joined the Monsters for their first trip to the AHL Playoffs in 2011.  He is in his second full season with the team in 2012-13.  He appeared in nine games with the Avalanche last season, his first as a pro.
