Pickard Perfect in Shootout in 2-1 Win

Calvin Pickard stopped 34 shots and was perfect in the shootout frame, propelling the Lake Erie Monsters (6-6-0-0) to a 2-1 shootout victory in Rochester over the North Division leading Americans (5-3-2-2) Monday afternoon. Stefan Elliott scored the lone goal for the Monsters, who won in the first of 10 games scheduled against Rochester this season. Bryan Lerg scored in the shootout- his second shootout goal of the season- while Tyson Barrie and Colin Smith also scored in the shootout frame.

Rochester struck first when Patrick Kaleta capitalized on a Monsters turnover at 9:37 of the opening period; a shorthanded goal for the Americans. Kaleta’s unassisted goal would be the lone goal scored by either team in the first period. Despite trailing after 20 minutes, the Monsters led the shots on net 13-8 through one period.

In the second period, the Monsters were able to tie the game at 1-1 at the 13:19 mark. The Monsters generated a flurry of pressure around Rochester goalie Matt Hackett, and defenseman Stefan Elliott found a loose puck in the left circle, and quickly snapped it past Hackett before the goaltender could get back in position. Elliott’s goal was his second of the season, and was assisted by J.T. Wyman and Brad Malone.

After a scoreless third period, and a scoreless overtime, a shootout was needed to determine the winner. In the shootout, Calvin Pickard followed his seven-save overtime period by denying all three Rochester shooters, while the Monsters converted on three-of-four shootout attempts to take the second point. Tyson Barrie, Bryan Lerg, and Colin Smith scored in the shootout to secure the Monsters victory.

Pickard stopped 34 of 35 shots in the win, and he is now 4-4-0 on the season. Hackett stopped 28 of 29 shots, and suffers the shootout loss in net, leaving his record at 3-3-2.

The Monsters return home to host Toronto on Thursday at 7:00 PM at Quicken Loans Arena.

NOTES: Malone’s assist gives him helpers in back-to-back games… The three-game point streaks of Paul Carey and Bryan Lerg come to a close in the win… Lerg is now 2-2 in shootouts this season… The Monsters were 0-4 on the power play, while Rochester was 0-3 on the power play… The Monsters improve to 2-2-0-0 on the road with the win… The Monsters and Rochester meet 10 times on the season, and with the win, the Monsters are 3-2-0-0 against North Division opponents… The Monsters are now 2-2-0-0 in November, and are 2-0 in shootouts this season… With Calvin Pickard stopping three shooters, Monsters goalies have now combined to stop all six combined shootout shooters they have faced in 2013-14.
