Monsters Shut Out in Grand Rapids

The Lake Erie Monsters (4-7-1-0) were unable to make it three straight wins as they were shutout by the Grand Rapids Griffins (5-5-0-0) by a 3-0 score at Van Andel Arena on Wednesday night. Prior to the loss, the Monsters had won two straight and four of their last five.

The game's first goal came on the power play for Grand Rapids after some swift puck movement in the offensive end. Fabian Brunnstrom, who boasts 100 games of NHL experience, found the back of the net from the side of the Monsters goal. He slipped a puck under the arm of the Monsters netminder to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first surrendered by Desjardins in a Monsters uniform, who shut out Toronto in his first game with the team on Sunday.

After a second period that did not yield any scoring, the Griffins tacked on a pair of goals to extend their lead to 3-0 in the third, which is how the game would end. At 11:28 of the third period, Willie Coetzee capitalized on a defensive zone turnover in the Monsters end and immediately fired a slap shot by Desjardins from the high-slot area to extend the Griffins lead.

At 14:47 of the third period, the Griffins capitalized again when Jamie Johnson tipped a low shot from Chris Conner into the Monsters net to make it a 3-0 game.

Desjardins made 35 saves on 38 shots, a season-high for a Monsters goalie. His record moves to 1-1-0 with the loss. Joey MacDonald stopped all 27 Monsters shots in the game and improves to 5-3-0.

The Monsters are back in action Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena when they take on the Houston Aeros for the first time this season.
