Monsters Fall 5-2 in Charlotte

Three third period goals against handed the Lake Erie Monsters a 5-2 loss at the hands of the Charlotte Checkers Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Trevor Cheek and Stefan Elliott scored for the Monsters in the defeat. The Monsters and Checkers meet for the fourth and final time this season Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Charlotte.

Sean Dolan took a pass from Zach Boychuck and quickly redirected it past Monsters goalie Calvin Pickard to complete a rush up the ice for Charlotte, giving the Checkers a 1-0 lead at 4:42 of the first period. Chris Terry converted on a shot from the right circle to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead at 16:08 of the first period on a five-on-three power play.

The Monsters countered with a pair of goals in the second period. Putting the Monsters on the board first was Trevor Cheek, who scored his third goal of the season at 2:50 of the period when he stabbed at a loose puck at the side of the net, sending it over the goalie line and pulling the Monsters to within a goal. Stefan Elliott tied the game for the Monsters when he scored on a wrist shot from the right circle at 10:11 of the second period. Elliott’s goal was his 10th of the season, and was assisted by Trent Daavettila and David van der Gulik.

Charlotte scored three third period goals to secure the win; the first of which coming from Danny Biega 48 seconds into the third period. Brett Sutter scored for Charlotte to give the Checkers a 4-2 lead at 2:34 of the third period, and Aaron Palushaj added a power play goal at 11:15 of the third period to extend the Checkers lead to 5-2.

Pickard suffers the loss in net for the Monsters; he stopped 21 of26 shots and is 15-16-4. John Muse stopped 35 of 37 Monsters shots, and is 21-11-0 this season.

The Monsters and Checkers meet again Sunday at 1:30 p.m.; a game that can be heard live on AM 1420 WHK.

NOTES: Daavettila’s assist came in his Monsters debut… The Monsters outshot Charlotte in each period of the game, registering 11 shots in the first period, 12 in the second period, and 14 in the third period… The Monsters are 1-2-0-0 against Charlotte this season… The Monsters are 6-9-0-0 against the West Division… The Monsters are 2-3-0-0 in March… The Monsters were 0-8 on the power play, while Charlotte finished the game 2-5 on the man-advantage.
