The Lake Erie Monsters recently won the 2008 Golden Matrix Award for Best Overall Video Display - Minor League Division - at the 26th Annual IDEA Conference in Chicago. It marks the first time a first-year franchise has won a Golden Matrix Award in any category.
IDEA, the Information Display and Entertainment Association, started in 1982 and has become the most widely recognized association of sporting event presentation and sports video production professionals in the country. The IDEA membership is made up of game presentation representatives of a majority of the major sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL) and dozens of Minor League teams and universities, as well as facility management firms and scoreboard/graphic display manufacturers. In all, IDEA is made up of 175 Active and Allied organizations and more than 375 individual members. Each year members submit samples of a wide variety of their game presentation, from in-game promotions to their season opener videos to mascot skits to the technical displays of their various scoreboards, to the voting board. Once voting takes place, the top three nominations in each category are voted on at the annual conference by the attending team representatives. The purpose of IDEA is to foster and cultivate the professional, educational, creative and technical standards of its members. The Golden Matrix Award for Best Overall Video Display covers all elements of sporting event video presentation, from in-game graphics (headshots, promotional branding, etc.) to team intros (live and pre-produced elements), as well as all live action elements in a game presentation (mascots, promotion teams, contests, crowd prompts, etc.) Other division winners of the 2008 Golden Matrix Award for Best Overall Video Display announced in Chicago were: Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Rockets (NBA), Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), Miami Dolphins (NFL) and University of Kansas (University).
