Checking in From Camp

New Monsters assistant coach Dan Laperriere is with head coach David Quinn and general manager David Oliver at Avs rookie camp in Denver and is checking in with Laperriere reports on the first couple days of rookie camp and how the Monsters staff is working with their predecessors, now in charge in Colorado.

The start of training has been very positive. An abundance of speed, skill and talent is definitely present on the ice. Players have been put through different flow drills, competition drills and systems throughout the week. Goalies have worked hard on technique with Avs goalie coach Jocelyn Thibault.

With three teams at camp, two teams would practice at the same time on different rinks, then have a two-period scrimmage. The non-starting goalies would practice for 20 minutes with Thibault, and then play the second half of the game. Team 3 would then have a system practice at the latter end of the game.

The players have been very closely watched and evaluated by our scouts and coaches. Meetings have taken place to asses the evolution of camp. Cuts were made before the start of the Burgundy and White game, junior players mostly. David Quinn and I coached that game and had a lot of fun doing it. We had a wager on the game...loser buys dinner! The game went to the wire, and my team came up short in penalty shots, losing by a 3-2 final. So I will have to pay up!

Last night the Avs hosted the Dallas Stars at the Pepsi Center. I spent the entire game in the video room, learning and helping Adam Deadmarsh with breaking down the game. It was nice to see how Deader operates.  Avs won the game, 3-1. After the game, more cuts were made. This morning the team traveled to St.Louis, were they will play the Blues in their second exhibition game. The players left behind will practice this morning with Quinny and I.

The training staff from Monsters is here taking care of business.  We will catch a flight back later today and sleep in our own beds tonight...and I can't wait!

The commitment from players and staff at camp has been nothing short of tremendous. We have enjoyed spending time here in Denver with everyone and are looking forward to a good season!
