Monsters Get First Win!Tweet10/20/2007 9:01 PM
After not finding much luck at home so far this season, it just took traveling to Syracuse, NY for Lake Erie to record their first franchise win. The Monsters defeated the Crunch, 3-2, on Saturday night.
Lake Erie was 0-6 heading into Saturday's road contest, having lost five of those at home in Cleveland. Of those six games, the Monsters had scored two goals apiece in five of them. As evidenced by the win in upstate New York, it simply took hitting the road and surpassing the two-goal mark to secure a victory for Lake Erie. The Monsters jumped on the board early, as left wing Cody McLeod scored mid-way through the first period. He was assisted by Mark Rycroft and Cody McCormick. Right wing David Jones posted his first goal of the year, scoring on a power play at 6:04 in the second, off passes from Kyle Cumiskey and Mike Vernace. Syracuse recorded the next two scores, tying the game at 2 goals apiece in the third stanza, after markers by Derek MacKenzie (8:17, 2nd) and Kris Beech (14:13, 3rd). McLeod was the hero for the Monsters, netting the game winner at 15:17 in the last period. Codey Burki and Rycroft assisted on the goal. Tyler Weiman was nearly flawless in goal for Lake Erie in the win. He saved 40 of the 42 shots he faced, and picked up his first win in the net. Weiman was named First Star of the game, his first, and first for a Monster this season. McLeod, now the Monsters leading scorer, was named Second Star. The Monsters will look to continue this success on the road, as the next three games for the team will be away from home. Next up in the three-week road swing is a re-match against the Stars on Saturday, October 27th, in Iowa. The team will eventually return home to Quicken Loans Arena on November 10th. |
