Monsters Win Big in OvertimeTweet12/19/2012 8:17 PM
David van der Gulik capped off a four-point night with the game-winning goal in overtime for the Lake Erie Monsters (13-13-1-1), who topped the Toronto Marlies (15-9-1-1) 4-3 at Quicken Loans Arena Wednesday night. Tyson Barrie also registered a multi-point game with a goal and an assist for the Monsters, who snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory. Toronto’s Ryan Hamilton struck first for the Marlies, giving them a 1-0 lead just 1:05 into the game, which they would hold until late in the second frame. At 14:10 of the second period, Toronto’s Greg McKegg gave the Marlies a 2-0 lead, before the Monsters would storm back with three straight goals over the second and third periods. van der Gulik cleared a puck out of the Monsters end, and Brad Malone was able to beat a pair of Toronto defensemen down the ice before cutting to the net and beating Marlies goalie Jussi Rynnas at 15:36 of the second period to pull the Monsters to within a goal before the end of the middle frame. The goal was Malone’s fifth of the season, and was also assisted by Mitchell Heard. Mike Sgarbossa scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 for the Monsters at 13:24 of the third period. The goal was reviewed, as van der Gulik fired a pass to Sgarbossa, and the puck redirected off Sgarbossa’s skate and into the net. The ruling was that there was no kicking motion on the play, and the goal stood.
Just over two minutes later at the 15:24 mark of the third period, van der Gulik skated through a hit on the left wing boards, carried the puck behind the net, and spotted an open Barrie in the high slot. Barrie one-timed a van der Gulik pass into the Toronto net, giving the Monsters their first lead of the game. The goal was Barrie’s sixth, and was also assisted by Stefan Elliott. Paul Ranger tied the game at 3-3 for Toronto 32 seconds later on a wrist shot from the left circle; a goal that forced overtime. In the extra session, Andrew Agozzino forced the Toronto defense to turn the puck over behind the net. Agozzino quickly sent a pass to van der Gulik in front, who immediately snapped a shot into the back of the net to secure the Monsters win. The goal was the sixth of the season for van der Gulik. Sami Aittokallio stopped 14 of 17 shots in net and is now 8-7-0. Rynnas is 4-1-1 after the overtime loss for Toronto; he stopped 32 of 36 Monsters shots. The Monsters are back on the ice Thursday night at 7:00 PM at Quicken Loans Arena against the Houston Aeros, who they will also face on Saturday to finish up a five-game home stand.
