Monsters Edged by Comets in Shootout


For the second straight game, the Lake Erie Monsters (12-11-0-3) fell in a shootout; this time by a 3-2 score to the Utica Comets (8-15-1-1) Sunday afternoon at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in Utica, New York. Mark Olver and Stefan Elliott scored goals for the Monsters, who collect a point in the standings for the second straight game with the shootout defeat. The Monsters return to action Friday night in Rochester.

Mark Olver tapped in a rebound with a backhand 1:12 into the game to give the Monsters an early lead, with assists to J.T. Wyman and Michael Schumacher. The goal was Olver’s sixth of the season, and gave him a goal in three straight games. Utica tied the game at 9:15 of the first period, when Kellan Lain sent a wrister from the high slot past Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio to make the score 1-1.

The Monsters entered the game with the American Hockey League’s sixth-ranked power play, and on a man-advantage, the Monsters broke the 1-1 tie. Stefan Elliott’s top-shelf wrister from the slot made the score 2-1 for the Monsters at 13:27 of the first period, with assists to Karl Stollery and Garrett Meurs. The Monsters carried their 2-1 lead into the first intermission.

Utica tied the game on a power play goal when Nicklas Jensen took in front of the net and slipped a low shot past Aittokallio at 12:55 of the second period.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, a shootout was required to determine a winner. Colin Smith led off the shootout with a goal for the Monsters, but Pascal Pelletier, Jensen, and Alexandre Grenier scored for Utica to secure the second point for the Comets.

Sami Aittokallio is 5-4-1 after the shootout loss; he stopped 28 of 30 shots. Joacim Eriksson stopped 26 of 28 shots in net for Utica, and he is now 6-10-1.

The Monsters hit the ice again on Friday night in Rochester at 7:05 PM; the game airs live on ESPN 850 WKNR. The Monsters return to Quicken Loans Arena Saturday night to host Rochester at 7:00 PM.

NOTES: Matt Hunwick’s five-game point streak snapped in the loss; he had four goals and seven points over the streak… Bryan Lerg’s five-game point streak snapped in the loss; he had two goals and six points on the streak… The five-game point streaks of Hunwick and Lerg are season-bests for the Monsters… Andrew Agozzino’s three-game assist streak snapped; he had five assists over the three-game streak… The Monsters are 8-6-0-3 against North Division opponents… The Monsters are 4-6-0-2 on the road this season… The Monsters are 2-1-0-1 against Utica this season… The Monsters were 1-4 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.
