Overtime Game-Winner Seals Monsters Victory

Stefan Elliott’s goal at 1:12 of overtime gave the Lake Erie Monsters (14-11-0-3) their second straight victory, propelling them to a 3-2 win over the Rochester Americans (13-11-3-3) before a crowd of 9,565 at Quicken Loans Arena Saturday night. Mark Olver and Karl Stollery also scored for the Monsters, while Sami Aittokallio won in net for the second straight game. The win completes a weekend two-game Monsters sweep of Rochester for the weekend; the Monsters topped Rochester 1-0 in a shootout on the road Friday night.

The Monsters have collected points in four consecutive games. Olver circled the offensive zone and scored on a wrist shot from the slot at 3:00 of the opening period, his sixth goal of the season. Michael Schumacher and J.T. Wyman assisted on the goal, which gave the Monsters a 1-0 lead.

Just 1:41 later, Karl Stollery netted a slapshot following a clean faceoff win by Cam Reid, giving the Monsters a 2-0 lead. In the second period, Rochester would tie the game at 2-2 following goals from Luke Adam and Nick Tuzzolino.

A scoreless third period would send the Monsters to overtime for the fourth straight game. At 1:12 of the extra frame, Elliott netted a wrist shot top-shelf for the game-winner, his sixth goal of the season. Gabe Beaupre assisted on the goal that secured a second point for the Monsters.

Aittokallio stopped 25 of 27 shots in net for the Monsters, improving his individual record to 7-4-1. Matt Hackett suffers the overtime loss; he is 8-9-2 after stopping 17 of 20 shots.

The Monsters are back on the ice Friday at 7:30 PM against the Chicago Wolves at Quicken Loans Arena.

NOTES: The Monsters are 2-0-0-2 over their last four games; all of which have gone to overtime… The four-game unbeaten-in-regulation streak for the Monsters ties their longest such streak this season; they had a four-game point streak from 11/11/13 to 11/16/13… The Monsters improve to 9-5-0-1 at home, and they are now 3-2-0-1 against Rochester, who they will meet four more times on the campaign… The Monsters are 10-6-0-3 against the North Division… The Monsters were 0-2 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill… The Monsters are 29-30 on the penalty kill against Rochester this season.
