A Coach's View at CampTweet
New Monsters assistant coach Dan Laperriere is with head coach David Quinn and general manager David Oliver at Avs rookie camp in Denver and is checking in with LakeErieMonsters.com. Laperriere reports on the first couple days of rookie camp and how the Monsters staff is working with their predecessors, now in charge in Colorado.
We came into Denver on Monday and met that night with the Avs staff, as well as with the players invited for rookie camp to give them an idea of what to expect for the three or four days leading up to the main training camp. On Tuesday, the players had their medical and physical testing done and everyone did pretty well.
David Quinn and I are in charge of running the on-ice practice for about 40 minutes. We put the players through flow drills so they gradually pick up the pace and get ready for main camp. Players then skate with the Avs players in a "shinny game," where there is no hitting and mainly skating, passing and working on on-ice cardio.
After doing the on-ice part, we meet with the Avs coaching staff to talk about certain things we saw and prepare for the next day of practice. We have a lot of conversation with (former Monsters head coach/current Avs head coach) Joe Sacco and (former Monsters assistant/current Avs assistant) Sylvain Lefebvre to get to know how they work and how they want to work together this coming season. Communication has been key and has been very productive. Joe and Sly have been very helpful.
Myself and Quinn and Oliver have spent a lot of time together to feel each other out and to get to know one another. We have the same vision and work well together. We share the same excitement as our Monsters camp approaches!
It's fun to spend time with other hockey people to see how they do things. We are all in this together, trying to improve our way of doing things so that the players benefit.
We are all enjoying our time in Colorado. So far so good!
