Although the Lake Erie Monsters will not field a team until the fall, the organization already has one hockey veteran on its roster. Former Cleveland Lumberjack Jock Callander was named the Director of Hockey & Community Relations for the new AHL franchise in December. The IHL all-time scoring leader is ecstatic to be back in Cleveland, and will routinely check in with lakeeriemonsters.com to catch us up on what's going on in the land of the Monster...
I am very excited to be working back in hockey, especially here in Cleveland! I had a six-month break from working in hockey from June until December, and although I enjoyed working in construction, I realized how much I loved hockey and wanted to be more involved in the sport again. Although some form of hockey - whether coaching kids or adults or just watching games - is always in my life, it's just not the same as actually working in the game.
I was very comfortable here at The Q from the first day because of the familiarity of the people from the building and from knowing a lot of the company that worked with the Lumberjacks when I played. Things in the office are going very well - the sales staff is selling tickets left and right and all the plans for a fun, enjoyable season are all being worked out. I know the Cleveland area hockey fans are going to enjoy the Monsters product and can't wait for the season opener in October. I do, however, want some warm weather for some golf before that time comes!
I don't know about you, but I am enjoying watching the NHL playoffs right now. This is the greatest part of the year for both the players and the fans. As a player, the playoffs are a constant roller coaster and I definitely miss that. And as a fan I know I can't wait to get home from work, get my iced tea and snack, lie down on the couch, and watch some hockey!
My career in professional hockey spanned 20 years. Two years as a coach and 18 as a player. Eight of those were spent here in Cleveland. So I have seen the big, loud crowds at The Q (when it was Gund Arena) and can't wait for those crowds to come back when Monsters hockey returns this fall!Until next time,
