Game Quotes, November 11th: Marlies 5, Monsters 4

Head Coach Joe Sacco

(On being up 2-0 on one of the best teams in the league): “Our first period was probably our best period of the year so far. We came out against one of the better teams in the league and dictated the play the way we wanted to. The guys did a good job of executing the game plan in the first period.”

(On why Toronto was able to answer Monsters’ goals with goals of their own): “You have to be focused after you score a goal. That first shift is so important for the team that does the scoring. We had the lead or were even until 10-minutes left in the game and that’s probably our third game that we’ve blown a one goal lead late in the third period. As a team, we have to find a way to secure that lead and come away with two points. It is a matter of being focused and being prepared for that next shift knowing that it’s a critical shift.”

(On improving since the last two games against Toronto): “I definitely see steps of improvement. We’ve come along way since our first six games, even though our record may not reflect it. If you look over the course of the season, we started 0 and 6 and since then we’re 2-2-2. I don’t want to make excuses, but very easily with a couple of different bounces, the results could be a little bit different. However, there are some positive signs with the guys starting to play better. Tonight was the first game that we’ve given up more than three goals in a long time. They are buying into the system and it’s only a matter of being consistent shift-by-shift and period-by-period.”

(On Jason Bacashihua’s performance tonight): “I thought he played well; most of the goals he didn’t have a chance on. I’m sure that the one he would have liked to have had back was the game winner. That was probably the one time that we needed a stop and I think it trickled through his legs there five hole. But it was his first game with a new team and that was a very good team (Toronto) that is very opportunistic and they capitalize on their chances. Overall, I was pleased. It’s a group effort and we need to do better in front of him to secure that lead.”

Right wing David Jones
(On being back on the ice) (On his recent scoring streak): “I’ve just been working hard and listening to the coaches about what I need to be doing and how I should be playing. I’ve just been trying to use my speed and finish checks and the puck is starting to go in, so I’ve been happy.”

(On boarding off defenders): “If I can get a full head of steam going and get the puck at full speed, I think I have an advantage over most players out there. Even if I can get a half step, I just try to drive the net. I’m not forced to score goals, so I just skate hard and finish checks and I think it’s the easiest thing I could do out there.”

(On the team finding its stride and what the team needs to do to take it to the next level): “I think we need to keep it simple. When we chip the puck out of our blue line and dump it in at their blue line we score goals. Playing solid defensively and keeping it simple is the way our team is going to win. We’ve got good skill, we’re very fast and we finish checks on the nights that we win. We’ve just got to keep it simple.”

Center Cody McCormick
(On tonight’s higher scoring game): “I think we played hard tonight. But we got to find a way to win when we are up on a team. We were up 2-0 tonight and we just got to find a way to win, we can’t get used to this. We can’t be happy with this.”

(On the best way to continue improving): “I think everybody is coming around. Things are going to start shaping up and the guys are really coming together. It’s going to happen soon for us. We just got to capitalize on what were doing on the ice.”
